NCC's Evolution

Image
Hai Peeps !!! This is Boopathy.              Most of us have some knowledge about NCC. Few of us have some experience in it. But many of us doesn't know the history behind it.               National Cadet Corps is a crew of Young persons related to Armed Forces with its Headquarters at New Delhi. Those persons are trained on grounds of Discipline and Leadership. It's Motto is " Unity and Discipline " ( Ekta aur Anushasan ).              It was evolved from the National Cadet Corps Act, 1948 which was enacted on April 16, 1948. It was enacted in order to compensate the shortage in Indian Army.                       In 1942, British Government established University Officers Training Corps ( UOTC ) in order to develop the Military forces. During the World War II, the UOTC did not fulfill the expe...

How old is Tamil Language?

Image
Tamil isn’t just a language, it is an important identity of Tamil culture. The Sangam age literary work ‘Kalithogai’ has references to Lemuria continent, where it is mentioned as ‘Karodaiyaaru’. It was destroyed during ‘Kadal Kol’ (tsunami). Ancient Tamil poet Kaniyan Poongundranar’s popular quote ‘Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir’ has been recognised by the United Nations. It is difficult to fix the age of the evolution of the language because of its rich vocabulary. ‘Tholkappiyam’, which is 2,000 years old, is the first literary work in Tamil. According to Tamil language expert M Srinivasa Iyengar, Tholkappiyam dates to before 350BC. The other Sangam Tamil literature is estimated to be around 5th century BC and recent archaeological evidence has proved this. Researchers of the subject have differing estimates for the age of Tamil. While recent excavations at Keezhadi throw light on the ancient civilization of Tamils, eart...

Why February has 28 days?

Image
This post is a continuation of the last post on Leap Day.  February’s 28 days date back to the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius. Before he became king, Rome’s lunar calendar was just 10 months long. It began in March and ended in December. At the time, Romulus, the first king of Rome, and his people found the time between December and March to be unimportant because it had nothing to do with the Harvest. When Numa Pompilius took reign, he decided to make the calendar more accurate by lining it up with the year’s 12 lunar cycles. The new 355-day year needed two additional months to make up for the lost time. So he added January and February to the end of the calendar. Because Romans believed even numbers to be unlucky, each month had an odd number of days, which alternated between 29 and 31. But, in order to reach 355 days, one month had to be an even number. February was chosen to be the unlucky month with 28 days.  This choic...

My Favorite Hero

Image
Heros are not only those that we see in the movies and comics; heros do really exist.  When we speak about real heroes, all that we could conceive is the military men. The first intergovernmental military organization ie the UN peace keeping force was formed in 1945. The intergovernmental force which was led by the hero that I'm talking about was much before that in August 1942. He fled his won country in order to make it free.  Yes, there is one and only hero who can be related to the above said information.  It's none other than Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. Popularly known as Nethaji. He was born in the erstwhile Bengal Province to Janakinath Bose and Parbhavathi Dutt Bose in 1897. Though he was born in a well to do family he fought for the independence of India. He's also an able politician, capable of motivating the young youth and was elected as the president of the INC in 1938. However, was ousted due to differences in opinion with Mahatma Gan...

Colonel John Pennycuick

Image
John Pennycuick: 🤔 In 1876, Madras Province was in the grip of a famine. It lasted for two years, spreading across the subcontinent. More than a million people died of starvation in Madras Province alone. Overall, the famine is estimated to have killed as many as 10 million people, a tragedy that went largely unnoticed in the rest of the world. Solution: While the political solution is well known, a second solution, less famous and highly contested today, came in the form of a remarkable feat of engineering. A tale of two rivers Two rivers originate from the Western Ghats—the big Periyar , which flows west along with several tributaries, and the small Vaigai , which flows east into Madurai and beyond. During summer, the Vaigai often dried up, many a time never even reaching Madurai. The Madras Province included present-day Kerala, Tamil Nadu, southern Karnataka, southern Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and southern Odisha, excluding the princely states of...

Modern-day Slavery

Image
December 2 is the United Nation's International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Did you know that slavery still exists today and is probably much closer to you than you realise? Blood and Earth In his book Blood and Earth, Kevin Bales speaks with Ibrahim, a 23-year-old slave who has worked in a gold mine since he was nine. He is dying. His lungs are filled with liquid caused by the dust and bacteria in the mine. As their conversation ends, Ibrahim turns to Kevin Bales and says, 'I want to be remembered. When my story is written and your book is ready, will you send me a copy? I want to show it to others, to show them that I am not completely useless. I just want to show that something good can come out of my life.' So what's the connection to you? As you read this article, you are probably using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Each device requires minerals – including gold. Perhaps the gold in your electronic device was mined by slaves. Slavery today Acc...

Allama Mashriqi & Subash Chandra Bose

Image
Allama Mashriqi aka Inayatullah Khan Mashriqi(Sage of the East)  and Subhas Chandra Bose are two prominent leaders of the Indian sub-continent. Both of them fought against colonial rule with equal enthusiasm. However, in weaving together historical facts, some historians tend to credit one over the other. No doubt, Subhas Chandras Bose is a freedom fighter. But at the same time, we misrepresent or wipe out Mashriqi’s paramount role in the Indian freedom movement. Atleast now after several years of independence let's know about facts about that have been hidden from the public view. Bose and Mashriqi share many similarities. Mashriqi and Bose were both born in British India; Mashriqi in Amritsar (Punjab) , and Bose in Calcutta (Bengal) . The two men fought for the same cause – freedom from British colonial rule. Similarly, both of them believed that Gandhi’s methods were ineffective in overthrowing the colonial rulers and adopted military tactics. Consideri...
